Theft of Storm Sewer Covers
Case 12-009160
Theft of Storm Sewer Covers
A total of eight storm sewer access panels were stolen from the Willow Grove area of Abington Township. The thefts were from storm sewers in the Clearview and Robinson Avenue areas. The thefts probably occurred sometime between 6:00 PM on February 22 and 8:50 AM on February 23, 2012. The panels are 12″ x 24″ and ¾” in thickness. Each one weighs approximately 50 lbs. They are made out of cast iron and are valued at $200 each. This is the second theft of these panels that Abington Township has experienced. On July 31, 2011 the same type of panels were stolen from the same area in Abington Township. Other municipalities are suffering similar thefts and it is believed that the panels are being stolen for their scrap value. When the panels are stolen it creates a dangerous situation because children or others could easily fall into the open sewers. They also create a monetary hardship for Abington Township as the loss so far is in the thousands and replacements are difficult to obtain.
Residents are asked to immediately report anyone tampering with these covers or any parts of sewers or manhole covers to 9-1-1. Legitimate Township employees who need to work on these sewers will always be in vehicles marked “Township of Abington” and will have appropriate identification.
