Crime Alert – Theft/Attempted Theft of Vehicles
April 10, 2024
CRIME ALERT
Theft/Attempted Theft of Vehicles
Abington Township is experiencing a recent increase in Kia and Hyundai thefts and/or attempted thefts. In most of the thefts/attempts the suspects will break a vehicle window, tamper with the ignition and use an USB cord to start the vehicles. These thefts have occurred between March 28, 2024 and April 9, 2024. The majority of these incidents took place during daylight hours and occurred in the Glenside section of the township. There have been additional incidents on Old York Road and Shoemaker Roads. Abington Police are asking that residents dial 911 in the event they observe any suspicious behavior in their neighborhood.
In an effort to combat these thefts, Hyundai and Kia have developed theft deterrent software and will provide it FREE of charge to vehicle owners. Owners of these vehicles can visit the following link for further information: Hyundai, Kia Provide Anti-Theft Software Update | NHTSA or contact their vehicle manufacturer.
Abington Police would like to remind our residents of the following:
- Always lock your vehicle, even when it’s parked in your driveway or garage.
- Always take your keys or fob with you.
- Never leave wallets, purses, or other valuables in your vehicle.
- Never leave your car running while unattended or unlocked.
- Consider using steering wheel immobilization devices such as “The Club.”
