Extortion Scam

The Abington Township Police Department has received reports from several individuals who have received extortion scam letters through the mail.  The letter threatens to expose, allegedly, embarrassing family information unless the victim sends $2,000 in Bitcoin.  Bitcoin is a virtual currency that provides a high degree of anonymity to the transactions.  The recipients are given instructions and a short deadline to pay the ransom amount requested.  If you receive one of these letters, please contact the Abington Police right away and try to handle the letter as little as possible.
