Congratulations Lt. Tom Scott on being selected as Chief of Police in Jenkintown Borough

Congratulations Lt. Tom Scott on being selected as Chief of Police in Jenkintown Borough

On behalf of all the men and women of the Abington Township Police Department, I want to express my gratitude to Tom for his 25 years of honorable and dedicated service to our community and the men and women of the Department. It is also my honor to announce that Tom has been selected as the Chief of Police in Jenkintown Borough, marking the seventh member of APD’s Command staff who will go on to lead another organization.

After graduating from Saint Joseph’s Prep and Philadelphia College of Pharmacy and Science, Lieutenant Scott began his career of public service in 1991 and served as an EMT and later, a Paramedic with Second Alarmers Rescue Squad. Tom joined our Department in 1997 and served in various roles to include the following: Patrol Officer, Field Training Officer, DARE Officer, SWAT/Tactical Team Officer, Patrol Sergeant and finally as a Patrol Lieutenant/Watch Commander. In addition to these positions, Tom served in various leadership roles to include the following: Deputy Emergency Management Coordinator, Team Leader/Commander of our Tactical Unit, Supervisor of our K-9 Unit, Use of Force Committee Coordinator, Firearms Instructor/Range Coordinator, and a member of our Citizens and Police Together (C.A.P.T.) Board of Directors. Throughout his career, Tom collaborated with Abington School District, Penn State University, Abington/Holy Redeemer Hospitals, St. Basils Academy, and numerous other churches, schools and synagogues to improve their emergency management and response to active threat procedures.  Tom’s unique background and experience in both fire services and EMS Management made him a tremendous asset to our community and our Department. His passion and commitment to the profession and his genuine concern for the safety and well-being of his officers was evident in everything Tom has done over the span of his career of thirty plus years in public safety.

In addition to numerous professional certifications, Lieutenant Scott has an M.S. in Public Safety Management from Saint Joseph’s University and is a graduate of the FBI Law Enforcement Executive Development Program and Northwestern University School of Police Staff and Command. Throughout his career, Lt. Scott took pride in his role as an instructor, bringing the best policies, procedures and tactics to our officers.  Tom was also proud of the work that our Department accomplished through our commitment to the philosophy of community oriented policing, as he oftentimes volunteered to assist with our programs and attended many events on his own time. There is no doubt that Tom will bring this same passion and commitment to professional standards and community oriented policing to the Jenkintown Borough Police Department.

On behalf of all the men and women of our Department who are presently serving and those who have served, I want to congratulate Tom on his retirement and wish him only the best as he begins this next chapter of his life. We are proud of his achievement and know that in many ways, we will still be working with him to protect and serve the members of our respective communities.  Abington’s loss is Jenkintown’s gain.  May God bless and protect Tom and the men and women of his new Department.  The Abington PD family will miss Tom, Michelle, and TJ, as they move on to the next chapter of Tom’s career.
