Robbery / Car Jacking
On September 18, 2024, at 12:08 PM, the Abington Township Police Department responded to a report of a robbery of a motor vehicle (carjacking) from the parking lot of the Abington Shopping Center, 1400 Old York Rd. The female victim stated that she parked her vehicle in the lot and walked towards a businesses in the shopping center. While walking, she was grabbed from behind by two males. The males grabbed her bag from her shoulder which held the keys to her vehicle. Using the victim’s keys, the suspects then stole her vehicle and fled south on Old York Rd. in the victim’s vehicle. The victim was not injured. The investigation revealed that the suspects had arrived at the scene of this crime in a Nissan Rougue, which had just been carjacked an hour earlier in the Olney section of Philadelphia.
The stolen vehicle was quickly observed by Abington Officers traveling south on Old York Rd., and officers were able to follow the vehicle into Philadelphia. Both suspects crashed the vehicle in the 5200 block of Bingham St. and fled on foot. Abington and Philadelphia Police Officers began searching the area where the suspects fled to, along the Tacony Creek Trail. While attempting to elude capture, the suspects attempted to carjack a third vehicle on Tabor Ave. The suspects were eventually apprehended after they were observed hiding in thick brush along the trail. Both suspects were arrested without incident.
The suspects, an 18-year-old and a 14-year-old juvenile were transported to the Abington Township Police Department and will be charged with robbery of a motor vehicle and related charges. The investigation into these crimes is continuing.
